Do you know the 11 possible ways to prevent Parkinson’s before it starts? Louise Carpenter describes in an article she wrote in today's edition of the Telegraph about how rising exposure to man-made chemicals in our food, water and air may be driving what we call the Parkinson’s pandemic. The article walks through why prevention is possible and it outlines practical steps each of us can take right now, including the Parkinson's 25, which are listed in the just released book, The Parkinson's Plan www.pdplan.org For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, wishing you a wonderful day.
Key Points:
- Environmental exposures may be driving modern Parkinson’s, and the trend is accelerating as more folks encounter pesticides, industrial solvents and polluted air.
- Prevention is feasible because many of the major risk factors come from outside the body rather than from genes. (We should however still vigorously pursue genetic research in Parkinson's)
- The Parkinson’s 25 provides a practical roadmap for lowering risk through changes in diet, exercise, cleaning practices, filtration and reduced chemical exposures.
My take: We must try to 'prevent the preventable.' The information in this article does not in any way mean that genetics are unimportant. We need an 'all hands on deck' approach to reducing the burden of Parkinson's disease. Here are 5 points that resonated w/ me (I am biased): 1- Clean your produce thoroughly w/ soap and water, and do not assume organic foods are free of harmful residues. 2- Choose a Mediterranean style diet high in plants and low in contaminated animal products, however remember that variety and consistency matter. 3- Make exercise a non- negotiable part of your weekly routine because vigorous and regular movement protects vulnerable brain circuits like Miracle Grow. 4- Filter the air and water coming into your home because these simple tools can cut pesticide and solvent exposures for you and your family. 5- Treat chemicals in dry cleaning solvents, pesticides and household sprays cautiously. Sleep well! #parkinson #fixelinstitute #parkinson
