Respiratory Complications of Parkinson's Disease
September 26, 2024
People with Parkinson's disease are at risk of lung problems due to both the disease itself and the side effects of medications. The loss of certain brain cells that produce dopamine can affect breathing. Common issues include blockage of the upper airways and stiffness in the chest, both of which may improve with levodopa treatment. However, the treatment can also cause breathing issues, such as uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia) that affect breathing, making it hard to tell if it's a side effect or part of the disease. Some medications, like ergot derivatives, can lead to lung tissue damage. Lung infections, like pneumonia, are a major cause of illness and death in people with Parkinson's due to these complications.
