Rolling over in bed for fifteen minutes a day improves balance and walking speed

A new study has looked at a very simple exercise to see if it can help with movement and stability. Researchers tested something called axial rolling, which is simply rolling the body from side to side whilst lying flat on the floor or a mat. Our inner ears and our spine work together to keep us steady when we move. Because stiffness in the middle of the body can make balance difficult, the researchers wanted to know if a basic rolling motion could help make moving around easier. The study followed thirty two people who were staying at a clinic for three weeks of intensive therapy. Everyone in the study received plenty of daily physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other specialist care. However, the researchers split the participants into two groups. The first group just did the normal therapy, whilst the second group added fifteen minutes of rolling exercises five days a week. By the end of the three weeks, the results were very positive. The group that did the extra rolling exercises found the movement completely safe and easy to do. Even better, they showed much larger improvements in their balance and walking speed compared to the group that only did the standard therapy. Whilst the extra rolling did not change how much people worried about falling, it clearly improved their physical ability to stay steady on their feet. This research shows that adding just fifteen minutes of simple rolling exercises to a daily routine can be a safe and highly effective way to boost balance and get moving more smoothly.
