Recent study on COVID-19 and Parkinson’s disease
July 18, 2024
Researchers conducted a study to explore the link between COVID-19 and Parkinson’s disease (PD). They surveyed PD patients from December 2022 to March 2023 and used genetic analysis to further investigate the relationship. They found that 65.7% of PD patients had contracted COVID-19, and 35.3% of them experienced worsening motor symptoms after the infection. Long-term PD (10+ years) and being more than a year since the last vaccination were identified as significant risk factors for infection. Genetic analysis showed that PD patients are more susceptible to COVID-19, but PD does not increase the severity or hospitalization rates of COVID-19. In summary, PD patients may have worsened symptoms after COVID-19 and are more prone to getting infected, especially if they've had PD for a long time or haven't been vaccinated recently.
