Holistic Approaches to Treating Parkinson Disease May Be More Effective

July 22, 2024

Many current treatments for Parkinson's disease (PD) focus on managing symptoms rather than addressing the root causes. NKGen Biotech is testing a new therapy, SNK01, which uses enhanced natural killer (NK) cells to tackle two main issues in PD: the build-up of a protein called alpha-synuclein and brain inflammation. Both problems are linked to the progression of PD. The NK cells are strengthened and reintroduced into the patient’s body, where they can cross into the brain, reduce harmful proteins, and lower inflammation. This dual approach aims to provide more comprehensive improvement for PD patients. Similar methods have shown promise in treating Alzheimer’s disease, and NKGen hopes to see the same success with PD.
