Meet SteadyScrib: The Clever Pen Helping People with Parkinson’s Write Again

April 22, 2025

When Izzy's beloved “Pops” began losing his ability to write due to Parkinson’s, it hit her hard. Writing wasn’t just something he did — it was part of who he was. Rather than accept that this part of him was gone, Izzy teamed up with her friend Alexis, and together they set out to bring handwriting back into the lives of people living with Parkinson’s. The result? SteadyScrib — a smart, beautifully simple writing set designed to help people with Parkinson’s regain control of the pen. ✨ A Pen with Purpose Izzy and Alexis met at Northwestern University in the U.S., where Izzy studied journalism and entrepreneurship, and Alexis took on biomedical engineering. A perfect pair, really. With a mix of heart, science, and a fair bit of grit, they built a tool that’s already changing lives. SteadyScrib isn’t just a pen. It’s a whole setup — a weighted pen with a large triangular grip that fits snugly in shaky hands, paired with a magnetic clipboard that helps keep the paper steady during tremors or rigidity. The idea is to make writing feel possible again, even when fine motor skills don’t cooperate. 🌍 From Pops’ Kitchen Table to the World The product officially launched in December 2024 and has already made its way into homes, clinics, and therapy centres across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and even Australia. People with Parkinson’s, occupational therapists, fitness centres, and support groups have all taken notice. During Parkinson’s Awareness Month this April, SteadyScrib donated pen sets to community events in New York and North Carolina — a testament to the heart behind the invention. And that heart keeps giving: 1% of every sale goes to either the Michael J. Fox Foundation or the Davis Phinney Foundation, depending on the buyer’s choice. 🔧 Built to Grow with the Community What’s brilliant is how Izzy and Alexis are constantly listening to their users. Based on feedback, they’ve already released refillable ink cartridges (yes, finally — we know how quickly ink runs out when you're rediscovering the joy of doodling or writing letters again!). They’re continuing to sell directly to customers while building partnerships with organisations that serve people with Parkinson’s. Their goal? To make SteadyScrib more than a product — a bridge back to self-expression and the simple joy of seeing your own handwriting on a page.
