Personalized Parkinson’s Medication Advice Based on How Symptoms Change Over Time

October 24, 2024

Parkinson’s disease is a lifelong condition that affects movement and other body functions. While doctors know a lot about which medications to start with, there's less guidance on how to adjust medications over time as the disease progresses. A new study aims to provide better ways to manage PD medications over the long term by looking at how patients' symptoms change over time. Using data from a large Parkinson’s research initiative, the study grouped patients based on their symptom patterns, creating four clusters: two showing desirable and undesirable states, and two highlighting problems with either movement (motor symptoms) or other symptoms (non-motor). The researchers then created decision models to figure out the best ways to adjust medications for each group, focusing on keeping patients in good health for as long as possible while minimizing side effects. The model doesn’t prescribe specific drugs but instead suggests how intense the medication should be depending on how a patient’s symptoms are changing. It provides doctors with flexible guidelines on whether to maintain, increase, or reduce medications, based on the patient's state. This approach could help clinicians make better decisions about adjusting PD medications to improve the quality of life for their patients.
