Medical Moment: New patch to combat Parkinson’s disease
July 25, 2024
Parkinson’s disease is the second most frequently diagnosed neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's, affecting nearly ten million people worldwide. Though drugs are available, many patients become resistant over time.
Researchers at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine have developed a new patch that may help control the disease's uncontrollable tremors and rigidity. The patch uses specially designed ceramics to transmit infra-red light, activating neurons and preventing their loss.
This non-surgical therapy has shown promise in mice, improving their balance and movement. Additionally, it can be used without a power supply, offering potential benefits for healing in remote areas.
