Could diabetes drugs like Ozempic be a treatment for Parkinson’s?

Recent research suggests that insulin resistance in the brain might play a role in Parkinson’s progression, prompting scientists to explore diabetes drugs, like Ozempic and Wegovy, as potential treatments. These drugs, called GLP-1 receptor agonists, regulate blood sugar and may also protect brain cells. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine tested lixisenatide, a GLP-1 drug, on 156 people with early-stage Parkinson’s. After a year of daily injections, those taking lixisenatide saw less worsening of movement symptoms compared to a placebo group. Even two months after stopping the drug, they maintained better movement control. However, side effects like nausea and vomiting were common, and larger studies are needed to confirm long-term benefits and whether this approach works for all Parkinson’s patients. Right now, GLP-1 drugs are only approved for diabetes and obesity. If you have Parkinson’s and one of these conditions, speak with your doctor before considering them. For now, these medications aren’t recommended solely for Parkinson’s, especially since they can cause weight loss, which may be problematic for people with PD. While promising, more research is needed to unlock the full potential of these drugs for Parkinson’s.
