New Parkinson's Drug VQ-101 Shows Promise in Early Human Trials

October 11, 2024

Vanqua Bio's experimental drug, VQ-101, has shown encouraging results in early human studies as a potential treatment for Parkinson's disease. VQ-101 is an oral medication that targets and activates the enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GCase), which helps clear harmful protein clumps in the brain associated with Parkinson's. In a Phase Ia trial, VQ-101 activated GCase by more than 75% in healthy volunteers, surpassing the study's target. This enzyme activation is important because it could help stop the buildup of alpha-synuclein, a protein linked to the progression of Parkinson’s. The drug was also well tolerated, with no serious side effects, and successfully reached the brain, showing potential to slow or stop the disease in future trials.
