Seaweed antioxidants show promise in preventing Parkinson's disease
August 5, 2024
Parkinson's disease, caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons, is increasing as the population ages. Current treatments only address symptoms, highlighting the need for new treatments and preventive measures.
Research led by Associate Professor Akiko Kojima-Yuasa at Osaka Metropolitan University found that Ecklonia cava polyphenols, antioxidants from seaweed, may prevent Parkinson's.
In studies with Parkinson's model mice, these antioxidants improved motor function and colon health. Cellular experiments suggest that it could be an effective preventive ingredient for Parkinson's disease.
