Music Therapy & Parkinson’s Disease
July 13, 2024
Music therapy, which utilizes rhythm, movement, voice, and creativity, is very popular among people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) for its potential to improve symptoms.
This approach includes a variety of therapies. One type of therapy defined by the American Music Therapy Association involves creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music, with techniques like rhythmic auditory cueing to facilitate movement and improve gait.
Dance therapies, such as tango, ballroom, and Irish step dancing, help PD patients by imposing rhythmicity on movement, providing aerobic exercise, and enhancing balance and coordination.
Singing, whether individually or in choirs, can improve voice volume and quality, as well as respiration and swallowing, by strengthening the related muscles.
These activities also offer additional benefits, including opportunities for socialization and collaboration, as well as potential improvements in mood and cognitive function.
