A Win for People with Parkinson’s: Cleaner Food Without Synthetic Chemicals
January 16, 2025
In a significant step towards safer food, the US has banned the use of Red Dye 3, a synthetic colouring commonly added to candies, cakes, beverages, and even medicines. This change not only reduces exposure to harmful chemicals for the general population but also holds particular promise for people with Parkinson’s, who may be more vulnerable to the effects of chemical additives.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the ban after studies linked Red Dye 3 (also called erythrosine) to cancer in male laboratory rats. While exposure levels for humans are significantly lower than in the studies, US law mandates a ban if any cancer link is established. The dye, which has been banned in cosmetics since 1990, is still used in a wide range of foods and medications, but manufacturers now have until January 2027 to reformulate food products and January 2028 for pharmaceuticals.
The decision comes after years of advocacy, including a 2022 petition from groups like the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). “This is long overdue,” said CSPI President Dr Peter Lurie, highlighting the inconsistency of allowing a substance banned in lipsticks to be used in foods consumed by children.
A Healthier Future for People with Parkinson’s
For people with Parkinson’s, avoiding harmful chemicals is essential, as the condition can make them more susceptible to the effects of toxins in food and the environment. Synthetic dyes like Red Dye 3, used to give products their bright red hues, can contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress—both of which are concerning for individuals managing chronic conditions.
As the FDA moves to eliminate Red Dye 3, it aligns with broader efforts to clean up food production, benefiting all consumers. This ban reduces the burden of potentially harmful additives that may worsen symptoms or interact with medications, offering those with Parkinson’s—and everyone—a cleaner, safer food supply.
Global Momentum for Safer Foods
The US joins a growing list of regions, including the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand, that restrict or ban Red Dye 3. California also took action in October 2023 by prohibiting the dye in foods. This momentum signals a global push for more natural alternatives
