Deep brain stimulation studies confirm over a decade of survival for people with Parkinson's

Researchers Malinda Iluppangama and Dilmi Abeywardana evaluated the long term survival outcomes of 214 people who underwent subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation between 1999 and 2007 at Pennsylvania Hospital. The investigation revealed that median survival following the surgical procedure was approximately 134 months, which equals more than eleven years of continued life. Over the course of the tracking period, mortality rates rose gradually as time progressed. Five years after receiving the brain stimulation implant, 8 per cent of people had passed away. By ten years, 42.5 per cent had died, and by fifteen years, 56 per cent had passed away. The average age at which people received their implant was 61 years, and among those who passed away during the follow up period, the average age at death was approximately 73 years. Statistical models used in the study examined how specific personal and surgical factors influenced survival times. Gender showed no meaningful statistical difference in long term survival outcomes between men and women. In contrast, age at the time of surgery emerged as a strong factor. People who were 60 years of age or older when they received their implant faced a significantly higher mortality risk compared to those who were younger at the time of surgery. Having at least one device revision or procedure adjustment after the initial operation was associated with a lower overall mortality risk. The researchers emphasised that this association likely stems from a statistical effect known as confounding by indication. People who live longer and remain in better general health are naturally more likely to qualify for and undergo routine maintenance or lead adjustment procedures over time, rather than the revision procedures themselves directly extending lifespan. Beyond long term survival figures, the study highlighted high levels of overall satisfaction. Among surveyed individuals who received subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation, 97 per cent reported being satisfied with their outcome, and 96 per cent indicated they would recommend the procedure to others. The authors concluded that deep brain stimulation offers durable long term survival alongside strong personal satisfaction, underscoring the value of age stratified patient selection and continuous long term monitoring. Realising that this research tracks people who had surgery between 1999 and 2007 actually brings a sense of quiet reassurance rather than doubt. To know how a device performs over ten or fifteen years, scientists have to look back at the people who paved the way with earlier technology, and seeing that those early pioneers lived a median of eleven years after their operation sets a strong baseline. Brain stimulation technology, surgical precision, and care guidelines have advanced significantly since those early cohorts, meaning those of us considering or living with Parkinson's today are receiving even more refined treatment, building on a foundation that has already proved its long-term safety and durability.
