Tardive Dyskinesia: A Serious Side Effect of Certain Medications

January 13, 2025

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a condition caused by some medications, including antipsychotic drugs used to treat mental health conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It leads to repetitive, involuntary movements in various parts of the body, such as the face, mouth, or limbs. According to Dr. Sanaz Attaripour Isfahani, a neurologist at UCI Health, as many as 20% to 50% of people taking these medications—also known as neuroleptics—could develop TD. Other medications, like the anti-nausea drug metoclopramide, can also trigger this condition. Dr. Isfahani specialises in treating movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease, tremors, and dystonia. She uses advanced treatments like deep brain stimulation and botulinum toxin injections to help manage these conditions. If you or someone you know is on these medications and notices unusual movements, it’s important to speak to a healthcare provider. Early intervention can make a big difference.
