A major challenge in Parkinson’s research is determining whether experimental treatments are actually reaching the brain and having the desired effect. Some late-stage clinical trials have not met their goals, often due to insufficient drug levels in the brain—a situation known as low brain penetrance. Given the time, cost, and hope invested in each trial, it’s essential to understand how a treatment behaves in the body early on, so that researchers can focus on the options with the greatest potential for success. Introducing SLEIPNIR: A Smarter Way to Test Promising Treatments To address this challenge, a new clinical trial platform called SLEIPNIR is being launched. Named after Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse of the Norse god Odin, this innovative approach will allow researchers to test up to three potential disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson’s at the same time—all compared against a single placebo group. Led by Professor Charalampos Tzoulis at Haukeland University Hospital and the University of Bergen, the study will evaluate whether these therapies reach the brain and engage with their intended targets by analyzing blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples. Safety and tolerability will also be closely monitored. Supporting Faster, More Informed Progress By testing multiple treatments in parallel and on a smaller scale, SLEIPNIR is designed to speed up the identification of promising therapies and reduce the risk of large, later-stage trials failing. Effective treatments identified in SLEIPNIR could then move into larger trial platforms such as EJS ACT-PD, helping to bring potential breakthroughs to people living with Parkinson’s more efficiently. Cure Parkinson’s Commitment Cure Parkinson’s is supporting the SLEIPNIR project as part of their mission to accelerate the development of therapies that may slow or stop Parkinson’s progression. Clinical trial platforms like SLEIPNIR are vital tools in the search for meaningful treatments, and we look forward to following the progress of this important initiative.
