A study published in npj Parkinson’s Disease found that a mobile app called BeatMove, which synchronizes music to a person’s walking pace, improved walking in individuals with Parkinson’s disease during daily activities and in lab tests without music. The app is part of the BeatPark rehabilitation program, designed to enhance walking through rhythmic auditory cues. The study involved 25 participants who used BeatMove during 30-minute outdoor walks, five days a week for one month. The app provided real-time beat synchronization and tracked progress. On average, participants walked 46.44 kilometers (28.8 miles) over the month. Improvements in walking speed, distance, and step length were observed during sessions and sustained over time. Lab tests conducted in silence before and after the program confirmed lasting benefits, demonstrating enhanced motor control without music cues. The researchers emphasized that integrating rehabilitation into daily life offers valuable insights and called for future studies with control groups to validate these findings.
