PD Frontline: A matching hub for clinical trials connecting people with Parkinson's to precision treatments

We would like to introduce you to a very important programme which involves many researchers, clinicians, and support charities working together in an enormous effort to transform how research is conducted. As one of the most vital research initiatives currently underway, PD Frontline is changing how clinical research works by turning a process that used to take years into a direct, accessible route right from home. For anyone living with Parkinson's in the UK, it offers a simple, powerful way to take an active role in testing new, targeted treatments. Simple, fast genetic testing at home Joining the registry gives access to free genetic testing for the GBA1 and LRRK2 risk genes, which play a central role in how the condition develops. Finding out if a person carries one of these variants opens the door to precision therapies designed specifically for their underlying biology. Testing has become easier and significantly faster. Alongside traditional saliva kits, new participants can now use a small upper-arm blood collection device called a Taso kit. It attaches using a light vacuum and takes just one to five minutes at home without pain. Advanced sequencing technology has cut the wait time for results down from eighteen months to between six and eight months, making it one of the fastest genetic testing setups in medical research. To take part in PD Frontline, participants must live in the UK, be aged between eighteen and ninety, and have a doctor's diagnosis of Parkinson's without any other neurological conditions. UK residency is essential because the team needs to send home DNA testing kits through the post and link directly with local NHS GP surgeries and hospital trial sites. For people living outside the UK, alternative global initiatives offer similar access to genetic testing, such as PD GENEration in the USA or the international ROPAD study across other countries. A direct gateway to advanced clinical trials Receiving genetic results is just the starting point. PD Frontline operates as an active trial matching hub, connecting UK participants directly to groundbreaking Phase 3 clinical trials without the usual delays. For the ASPro-PD trial, PD Frontline directly refers eligible participants to a major Phase 3 study testing high-dose Ambroxol, a repurposed cough medicine that boosts essential cell-clearing enzymes. Over eight hundred participants have already been referred through the platform. For the EJS ACT-PD trial, the registry connects members to a multi-arm trial testing promising treatments simultaneously, including medications like Telmisartan and Terazosin. For global initiatives like the GP2 and LITE studies, PD Frontline shares genetic data with broader research projects investigating genetic factors and deep biological markers across the UK. Transforming the future of care With more than seven thousand five hundred participants across fifty-six NHS sites, PD Frontline is the largest registry of its kind globally. By providing a sample, participants contribute directly to international guidelines for genetic counselling and help shape a future where treatments are tailored to an individual's specific genetic profile.
