Laughter Yoga and Parkinson's

Laughter Yoga is particularly beneficial for individuals with Parkinson’s, as it promotes deeper breathing, increases heart rate, and enhances lung function—all of which can help counteract the stiffness in the ribcage and abdomen often experienced in Parkinson’s patients. Additionally, it supports speech and communication by strengthening the voice and aiding in lung clearing. The practice also triggers the release of mood-boosting chemicals like endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin while reducing cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress.
Laughter Yoga is a unique practice that involves laughing voluntarily to gain the benefits of natural laughter, such as watching a comedian. Typically performed in a group setting, it doesn’t involve traditional yoga poses but instead features simple laughter exercises and movements.
Sessions start with gentle warm-ups to prepare the body and voice, followed by laughter exercises interspersed with mindful breathing. This format helps participants ease into the laughter and maintain a comfortable pace. The session concludes with everyone relaxing, often leading to spontaneous, uncontrollable laughter.
While participants may initially feel self-conscious, the playful nature of the exercises usually leads to genuine laughter, creating a childlike sense of joy and ease. Laughter Yoga is not only a fun way to improve physical health but also fosters social interaction and overall well-being. Participants can practice at home using a series of simple breathing and laughter techniques that encourage a carefree, joyful attitude.
