An Australian company, PreveCeutical, is developing a new nose-to-brain delivery system that could improve Parkinson’s treatment by directly delivering treatments to the brain. The system uses a sol-gel solution that turns into a gel when it contacts the nasal lining, bypassing the blood-brain barrier. This approach is expected to be safer, longer-lasting, and have fewer side effects compared to oral medications, which often cause issues like involuntary movements and “off” periods. The sol-gel system allows the medication to remain in the nasal passages, releasing it slowly over time, potentially reducing the dose needed and improving effectiveness. PreveCeutical plans to test the system in preclinical models and explore partnerships for further development. The company also envisions using this platform for other treatments, such as medicinal cannabinoids, to address neurological challenges more effectively.
