High Hopes Therapeutic Riding creates equine-assisted program for those with Parkinson’s disease
January 10, 2025
LeahJSHigh Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Inc. in Old Lyme, Connecticut, has expanded its Equine-Assisted Services Program to support people with Parkinson's disease. Founded as one of the oldest and largest therapeutic riding centers in the country, High Hopes offers participants physical, emotional, and cognitive growth. The Parkinson's program, which began as a pilot a year ago, has proven to be life-changing, offering participants improved movement, relaxation, and connection with horses. Activities include stretching, grooming, and leading horses to relieve muscle tension and promote mindfulness.
The program, which runs every Tuesday, was developed after Carol Merkt identified a growing need for such services. It has since gained significant momentum, with instructors certified in Equine Mental Health and Learning leading the sessions. The program focuses not only on physical benefits but also on building relationships and finding joy, as horses offer a unique, non-judgmental form of connection.
Thanks to the Kitchings Family Foundation, which covers over 95% of the program's costs, the service is accessible to many participants. New participants with Parkinson's disease are encouraged to join, and the program concludes with a coffee session to reflect on the experience. The program aligns with High Hopes’ mission to inspire, support, and transform lives through the power of horses.
