Rebrain’s AI software to optimize brain targeting approved by FDA
September 3, 2024
LeahJSThe FDA has approved an updated version of Rebrain's OptimMRI software, which now includes a new feature that uses machine learning to help doctors better target specific areas of the brain for certain treatments. These treatments, like MR-guided focused ultrasound and radiosurgery, involve carefully destroying small areas of the brain that are causing problems, such as those related to Parkinson’s disease.
OptimMRI combines artificial intelligence (AI) with MRI scans to help doctors accurately find the best spots to place electrodes or to perform these treatments. This is especially useful for people with Parkinson’s who have symptoms like tremors and muscle stiffness that aren’t fully controlled by medication.
The new version of the software can also target an area of the brain important for treating essential tremor, a condition that causes shaking in the hands and arms. Rebrain’s technology helps doctors plan these surgeries by automatically recognizing brain structures and using AI to mark the correct areas on MRI scans. This makes the process more consistent and could help more patients get the treatment they need. The company’s founders will share more about this technology at a neurosurgery conference soon.
