Fitness, friendships, and fun: The benefits of boxing with Parkinson’s
July 27, 2024
After being diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2015 and feeling isolated, the author joined Rock Steady Boxing, a program specifically for people with Parkinson's. Initially skeptical, they found the program, held in a traditional downtown boxing gym, incredibly beneficial.
The classes, led by a retired boxer with Parkinson's and a young fitness instructor, involved a variety of exercises, including boxing, which improved physical coordination, posture, and strength. The author emphasized the sense of community and mutual support among participants, which was as valuable as the physical benefits.
The program has since evolved and moved to different locations, now called Knock Out Parkinson’s Disease, but continues to offer a rigorous and enjoyable workout three times a week.
