A natural compound called gardenin A, found in a common South Asian shrub, may help with both movement and memory problems in Parkinson’s disease. In a mouse model, researchers found that gardenin A protected brain cells that produce dopamine, a key chemical for movement control that is lost in Parkinson’s. It also reduced the buildup of a harmful protein called alpha-synuclein, which forms clumps in the brains of people with the disease. The compound appears to work by boosting the brain’s antioxidant defenses and reducing inflammation. Mice given gardenin A showed better movement and memory compared to those without treatment. The researchers believe this compound could be promising for treating Parkinson’s since it helps with both motor and cognitive symptoms—something few current treatments do. However, more research is needed to understand how it works and whether it could help people with the disease.
