ASPro-PD is a phase 3 clinical trial of the cough medicine ambroxol to determine whether it can slow Parkinson’s progression. Evidence suggests that ambroxol increases the activity of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GCase), which helps cells clear excess waste. Problems with GCase are thought to contribute to Parkinson’s progression. Led by Professor Anthony Schapira at University College London (UCL), this trial will involve 330 people with Parkinson’s, half of whom will be carriers of a GBA1 genetic variation - the gene that provides the instructions for building GCase. After a delay due to drug reformulation, Cure Parkinson’s announced that the first clinical site was opened in February of this year, with recruitment beginning earlier this month. Two members of the trial team - Dr Marco Toffoli and Mairead Cullen - will be speaking more about the trial set-up and what recruitment will look like moving forward. Prof Schapira also gives some opening remarks about the story behind ambroxol. Watch the full video in the link attached below.
