Irlab Therapeutics is testing a new oral therapy, IRL757, which has shown to be safe and well-tolerated in healthy volunteers during the first phase of clinical trials. This drug is being developed to treat apathy, a condition marked by a lack of motivation and interest, commonly seen in people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. According to Dr. Joakim Tedroff, Irlab’s chief medical officer, these early results are promising for creating a treatment that could help millions affected by apathy due to neurodegenerative diseases. The second phase of the trial will now focus on giving participants multiple doses of IRL757 to further evaluate its safety and how the body processes it, with final results expected by early 2025. Currently, there are no approved treatments for apathy, which impacts over 20 million people in the U.S. and Europe. It’s thought to be linked to disruptions in brain communication. IRL757 aims to address this issue and has shown positive effects on motivation and cognitive function in preclinical testing.
