Reimagining Parkinson’s Trials: Early-Stage Study Offers New Hope and Accessibility
July 3, 2025
LeahJSBioVie’s SUNRISE-PD Phase 2 clinical trial is testing a new oral therapy called bezisterim for people in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. What makes this trial stand out is its hybrid, decentralized design, which prioritizes accessibility and patient comfort.
🏡 Flexible Participation: At Home or in Clinic
Many people with Parkinson’s face challenges like mobility issues, late diagnosis, or living far from specialized centers—barriers that often prevent them from joining clinical trials. SUNRISE-PD helps overcome these by allowing participants to complete visits from home or at a local clinic, supported by home visits from study nurses and video calls with neurologists. This structure not only increases convenience but also helps include more diverse participants without compromising scientific quality.
💊 What Is Bezisterim?
Bezisterim is an oral small-molecule therapy designed to reduce two key issues linked to Parkinson’s:
Inflammation in the brain
Insulin resistance, which affects how brain cells use energy
Both of these processes may contribute to nerve cell damage and worsening symptoms over time.
Earlier studies of bezisterim, in people already on standard treatments like levodopa, showed promising results. Participants under 70 experienced more improvement in movement symptoms than those on a placebo.
👥 Who Can Join?
SUNRISE-PD is currently recruiting participants in Michigan, North Carolina, and Ohio, with additional sites in Connecticut and Illinois expected soon. To be eligible, individuals must:
Be between ages 45 and 80
Have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s within the past 18 months
Not yet started treatment with levodopa or similar medications
📊 What’s the Goal?
The study will measure how well bezisterim reduces motor symptoms, using a well-known Parkinson’s rating tool (MDS-UPDRS Part 3). It will also test whether this approach can improve the experience of participating in a clinical trial—using digital tools, remote visits, and a patient-centered design approved by the U.S. FDA.
🌟 Shaping the Future of Research
BioVie hopes that SUNRISE-PD will not only evaluate a promising standalone treatment but also set a new standard for how Parkinson’s trials are run: more inclusive, more flexible, and more focused on the real lives of people with Parkinson’s.
