Novel Carbidopa-Levodopa Formulation Improves Sleep Quality in Parkinson Disease
April 5, 2025
LeahJSIn a recent clinical trial called RISE-PD, researchers found that the extended-release version of carbidopa-levodopa (a common medication for Parkinson’s disease) gave people more hours of better movement each day compared to the regular, immediate-release version.
Focus on Sleep: Why It Matters
Sleep problems are common and challenging for many people living with Parkinson’s. This analysis looked at whether switching to the extended-release medication could help improve sleep quality.
Who Was in the Study?
More than 500 participants took part in this part of the study. Over 20 weeks, they went through three stages:
3 weeks adjusting their immediate-release medication
4 weeks switching to the extended-release version
13 weeks continuing treatment without knowing which version they were taking
Improved Sleep and Fewer Nighttime Symptoms
After switching to the extended-release version:
Overall sleep quality improved
Nighttime movement symptoms decreased
Fewer Parkinson’s symptoms disrupted sleep
These improvements were measured using a sleep questionnaire designed for people with Parkinson’s (called PDSS-2). On average, scores showed noticeable improvements that were statistically significant.
What This Means for People with Parkinson’s
The results suggest that switching to extended-release carbidopa-levodopa may help people with Parkinson’s sleep better by reducing both sleep disruptions and nighttime motor symptoms. This can make a real difference in quality of life.
