FDA Approves New Smart Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease
February 25, 2025
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new type of deep brain stimulation (DBS) technology from Medtronic, designed to improve treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease. This approval includes Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS) and the BrainSense Electrode Identifier (EI), which together provide a more personalised approach to managing symptoms.
What Makes This Different?
Traditional DBS delivers a constant level of electrical stimulation to the brain, regardless of changes in symptoms. However, Parkinson’s symptoms fluctuate throughout the day due to factors like medication and activity levels. The newly approved aDBS technology automatically adjusts stimulation in real-time based on the patient’s brain activity. This means better symptom control, fewer side effects, and longer battery life for the device.
Meanwhile, the BrainSense Electrode Identifier helps doctors more accurately identify the best location in the brain to place the electrodes, making the initial setup of DBS treatment faster and more precise.
Why Is This Important?
This new technology is a breakthrough for Parkinson’s patients because it provides more tailored and efficient treatment. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, aDBS continuously monitors brain signals and adjusts stimulation as needed. This could lead to improved movement control and a better quality of life for those living with the disease.
Backed by Research
The FDA’s decision was based on the ADAPT-PD trial, the largest and longest study of aDBS in real-life settings. The study showed that aDBS can effectively detect and respond to changes in a patient’s brain signals, leading to better treatment outcomes.
What Experts Say
Neurology expert Dr. Helen Bronte-Stewart from Stanford University called this approval a “revolutionary step” in Parkinson’s treatment. She highlighted how automatic, personalised adjustments in therapy can greatly benefit patients as their symptoms evolve.
A New Era for Parkinson’s Treatment
DBS has long been an effective option for Parkinson’s patients who no longer respond well to medication. Now, with aDBS and BrainSense EI, treatment can be even more precise and effective, helping patients live more comfortably with fewer disruptions from their symptoms.
This approval marks a major advancement in Parkinson’s care, offering hope for a better, more personalised future for those affected by the disease.
