The Michael J. Fox Foundation has awarded a $14.7 million research grant to Verily, a health-focused technology company, to help uncover new insights into Parkinson’s disease at the molecular level. What Will This Research Involve? Verily will analyze blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples from over 500 participants in the Personalized Parkinson’s Project (PPP)—a long-term study based in the Netherlands. These samples will be used to create detailed biological profiles that explore how genetics, the immune system, and metabolism contribute to Parkinson’s. A Global Resource for Discovery All of the data collected will be made publicly available through Verily’s Workbench platform, allowing scientists around the world to access and collaborate using this rich information. The goal is to support research that leads to new treatments and better understanding of how Parkinson’s develops and progresses. Why It Matters Parkinson’s disease affects each person differently, and the causes behind the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells are still not fully known. By examining patterns in proteins (such as alpha-synuclein), immune responses, and genetic markers, researchers hope to uncover clues that could predict disease activity or identify targets for new therapies. A Step Toward Better Care and Hope for the Future This initiative builds on a long-standing partnership between Verily and the Michael J. Fox Foundation. As Mark Frasier, Chief Scientist at MJFF, said, the ultimate goal is to enable scientific breakthroughs that can improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s.
