Parkinson's Treatment Advancements: Clinical Trials Begin for Potential New Therapy
January 1, 2025
LeahJSGain Therapeutics Inc. (GANX:NASDAQ) has initiated the Phase 1b clinical trial for GT-02287, its leading candidate for treating Parkinson's disease (PD), after receiving regulatory approval in Australia. This open-label trial will assess the safety and tolerability of GT-02287 over three months in patients with Parkinson's. Enrollment is expected to finish by spring 2025, with results anticipated mid-year.
The trial builds on the success of the earlier Phase 1 study in healthy volunteers, where GT-02287 demonstrated a strong safety profile and significant activation of the glucocerebrosidase (GCase) enzyme, a key factor in Parkinson's disease. Gain Therapeutics reported that the drug achieved over a 50% improvement in GCase activity. Dr. Jonas Hannestad, Chief Medical Officer of Gain, expressed enthusiasm for the trial's launch in Australia, noting the region's historically low representation in PD clinical trials.
Preclinical research underscores GT-02287's promise as a disease-modifying therapy. The brain-penetrant allosteric modulator has shown the ability to restore GCase function, reduce neuroinflammation, and enhance motor and cognitive performance in PD models. Supported by funding from organizations such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation and The Silverstein Foundation, GT-02287 is emerging as a strong contender for Parkinson's treatment.
