Building Strength and Community: A Holistic Approach to Parkinson’s Wellness
January 23, 2025
LeahJSAfter being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Gary “Rosie” Rosen, a 72-year-old retiree from Eden Prairie, immediately joined the Parkinson’s wellness program at the Eden Prairie Community Center. Refusing to let the neurodegenerative disorder define him, Rosen found not only physical benefits but also emotional strength and a sense of community within the program. Offering a range of tailored fitness classes—including boxing, yoga, strength training, tai chi, and Nordic walking—the program is designed to help participants improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination while addressing the unique challenges of Parkinson’s disease.
Launched in 2017, the program has grown significantly, now serving over 70 participants and expanding to include caregivers through a companion initiative called “Get Partnering with Parkinson’s.” This caregiver-focused program offers fitness classes, social events, and opportunities for self-care, recognizing the vital role caregivers play and their need for support. Funded by competitive grants from the Parkinson’s Foundation, the program emphasizes holistic well-being, combining physical fitness with social, mental, and emotional health resources.
Under the guidance of certified instructors like Charlene Austin, the program encourages participants to focus on deliberate, exaggerated movements to counteract the effects of Parkinson’s, such as shuffling and stiffness. For Rosen and others, these exercises are not only about maintaining physical mobility but also about building confidence and creating a supportive, judgment-free environment.
The program also fosters camaraderie and shared purpose, with participants forming meaningful connections that help combat the isolation often associated with Parkinson’s. As Rosen described, small victories—whether improving balance, mastering an exercise, or sharing a laugh—carry immense weight. The instructors and staff, committed to creating a positive atmosphere, have transformed the program into a lifeline for many, offering hope, joy, and a path forward in the face of Parkinson’s disease.
