Vyalev Helps Man Sleep Better and Move More: Report

A 50-year-old man in Japan with Parkinson’s disease found relief from sleep issues and motor symptoms after starting treatment with Vyalev (foscarbidopa and foslevodopa), according to a recent case report. Parkinson’s disease can cause sleep disturbances, including a condition where people act out their dreams (known as dream enactment behavior), which can be dangerous. This man had been experiencing these issues, along with other Parkinson’s symptoms, for several years. His motor skills, such as walking and standing, were also severely impacted during "off times," the periods when his medication wasn’t working properly, leaving him unable to move. Before his hospital visit, the man was on a standard Parkinson's treatment involving levodopa (a medication that helps manage symptoms) but still struggled with long periods of immobility, lasting up to 15 hours a day. His symptoms worsened, and he experienced hallucinations and delusions, which improved when he stopped certain medications. However, his Parkinson's treatment wasn't effective enough to help with his motor symptoms or sleep problems. After starting Vyalev treatment, which delivers a continuous supply of medication through an infusion pump, the man showed significant improvements. Within nine days, his motor skills improved, and the time he spent unable to move was reduced from 15 hours a day to just six hours. His sleep also improved, with longer, more restful nights and fewer interruptions. Tests measuring his sleep before and after the treatment showed an increase in total sleep time and a better sleep pattern, which likely helped improve his daytime movement and reduced feelings of tiredness. The researchers concluded that Vyalev could be an effective treatment for managing Parkinson’s-related sleep problems and motor symptoms.
