July 17, 2024
A small study found that a new daily pill, IRX4204, may help ease motor symptoms in people with early Parkinson’s disease. The 30-day trial showed that most participants improved with the treatment. The company plans to start a larger Phase 2 study later this year to further test IRX4204 against a placebo.
IRX4204 is also being tested for cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other brain diseases linked to inflammation. In past trials, it has been safe for long-term use. IRX4204 works by protecting dopamine-producing brain cells, which are crucial for controlling movement.
In the Phase 1 trial, 15 people with early Parkinson’s took IRX4204 daily along with their usual treatments. Most showed significant improvement in motor skills within two weeks. The drug was well-tolerated with few side effects. The company believes IRX4204 could become part of effective treatments for various neurodegenerative diseases.
