American Parkinson’s Association creates new game to spark intimacy for couples with Parkinson’s
May 11, 2026
Intimacy is a topic that rarely makes the headlines, yet it remains one of the most personal and significant challenges for many couples living with Parkinson's. While much of the focus naturally stays on managing movement or medication, the emotional and physical connection between partners can often feel like it has been pushed to the sidelines. Symptoms like fatigue, stiffness, or mood changes can create an unspoken distance, making it harder to find the same closeness that once felt so natural.
Recognising this, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) has designed a thoughtful way to bring couples back together. Building on the success of their original kit and booklet, they have now launched a resource called ParkinSex: The Game. It is a creative, low-pressure tool designed to help partners reconnect through play and conversation, rather than clinical advice.
The game is built around simple prompts and everyday items, such as a candle or a bubble bath, to help couples explore closeness in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful. By using these cards to spark new activities or shared moments, the goal is to shift the focus away from the condition and back onto the relationship itself. Rosa Peña, APDA’s Senior Vice President of Programs and Services, explains that the aim is to help people rekindle their connection and find new ways to enjoy intimacy that work for them, without any added pressure.
The beauty of the game is its flexibility; while it comes with instructions and a tutorial, couples are encouraged to make their own rules and simply enjoy the time spent together. It serves as a gentle reminder that while Parkinson's may change some aspects of life, it doesn't have to define the private bond between two people. These resources, including the original booklet and the new card game, are available through the APDA website to help couples find their way back to a more vibrant and connected partnership.
