Herantis Pharma confirms biological response to HER-096 in Phase 1b trial results
January 15, 2026
Herantis Pharma has started the new year with a significant scientific step forward, releasing data this week that suggests their investigational therapy, HER-096, is doing exactly what it was designed to do inside the human brain. The Finnish biotech company announced that its Phase 1b clinical trial successfully identified specific biological changes—known as biomarkers—indicating that the drug is hitting its targets.
While the primary goal of this early-stage trial was simply to ensure the drug was safe and well-tolerated in people with Parkinson’s, the researchers included an exploratory analysis to see what was happening under the bonnet. The results were encouraging. The data showed that HER-096 triggered a measurable response in three critical areas of cellular health: inflammation, energy production, and waste disposal.
The science behind HER-096 is distinct because it attempts to mimic a naturally occurring protein called CDNF, which helps protect and restore dopamine-producing neurons. The trial data suggests the drug successfully influenced proteins involved in 'proteostasis', which is essentially the cell’s internal quality control system responsible for clearing out misshapen or toxic proteins. Additionally, it appeared to boost mitochondrial function—the batteries that power our cells—and dampen neuroinflammation, which is often the fire that drives the progression of the condition.
Perhaps the most practical victory in these findings is the delivery method. Developing drugs for the brain is notoriously difficult because of the blood-brain barrier, a defensive wall that keeps most foreign substances out. HER-096 is designed to be injected under the skin, much like insulin, and then find its own way into the brain. The trial confirmed that this simple subcutaneous injection achieved the necessary concentrations in the spinal fluid to have a therapeutic effect, sparing participants from invasive surgical delivery methods.
With the safety profile confirmed and these biological signals pointing in the right direction, Herantis Pharma is now using this map to plan a larger Phase 2 efficacy study. This next stage will be the true test to see if these cellular improvements translate into slowing the condition or improving movement for those living with it.
