Evaluating the neuroprotective properties of ‘CP-6’ for people living with Parkinson's disease
November 11, 2024
LeahJSCure Parkinson's has announced funding for a new pre-clinical study on a drug called CP-6, led by Dr. Marco Fazzari and his team at the University of Pittsburgh. CP-6, developed by Creegh Pharmaceuticals, is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring fatty acid with potential benefits for Parkinson's disease. Early lab studies suggest CP-6 may protect dopamine neurons—cells that are progressively lost in Parkinson's—by reducing inflammation, combating oxidative stress, and activating cell repair mechanisms.
In this one-year study, Dr. Fazzari’s team will examine whether CP-6 has a protective effect on neurons, explore how it works, and determine the duration of its effects to evaluate its potential for future clinical trials. Given Parkinson's complex and varied progression, exploring drugs like CP-6 that target multiple biological pathways is crucial. Recommended for further study by the International Linked Clinical Trials committee in 2023, CP-6 could represent a promising option if it proves effective in pre-clinical models.
