About one-third of people with Parkinson's disease experience freezing episodes, which are sudden, short blocks of movement that mainly occur when starting to walk, turning, navigating narrow spaces, or approaching obstacles. These episodes can last from a few seconds to several minutes and can limit mobility, increase fall risk, and reduce socialization and quality of life. Ten Tips to Manage Freezing Episodes: 1. Try another movement like raising an arm or touching your head before restarting. 2. Change direction by stepping sideways and then moving forward. 3. Use a laser pointer to create a visual cue and step on the light. 4. Visualize an object on the ground and step over it. 5. Wear a metronome for a rhythmic cue to help restart. 6. Hum a song and time your restart with the beat. 7. Count “1-2-3-go” and then step forward. 8. Shift your weight side to side to initiate a step. 9. March in place a few times before stepping forward. 10. Don’t fight the freeze; shift attention from legs to arms, then resume walking.
