Pushing for Federal Research Funding for Parkinson’s
June 26, 2025
In a powerful show of unity, three of the largest Parkinson’s advocacy groups in the United States—the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA), the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and the Parkinson’s Foundation—have issued a joint public statement urging U.S. lawmakers to protect and increase funding for Parkinson’s research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The timing couldn’t be more critical. Recent U.S. budget policy changes have led to reductions in research funding, including a 15% cap on essential indirect costs like lab operations, equipment, and support staff. Universities and medical centres across the U.S. are already reporting slowdowns in clinical trials and neurological research—delays that could stall progress for years.
Why does this matter to the rest of us? Because much of the world’s most promising Parkinson’s research starts in the U.S. From early detection breakthroughs to innovative new therapies, NIH-funded studies often set the pace for global progress. When U.S. research is well-funded, the ripple effects benefit the Parkinson’s community everywhere.
This isn’t the first time the Parkinson’s world has united. Just weeks ago, we supported the Movers & Shakers campaign calling on the UK Parliament to do more for Parkinson’s care. Now, we stand with our U.S. partners in this vital push to protect the future of science.
